OUR PROJECTS

At the York Hispanic Centre, we believe in building strong, connected communities where everyone—from children to seniors—can thrive. Our programs are designed to support well-being, foster connection, and empower residents across our neighbourhoods.

When the COVID-19 pandemic left many seniors isolated, we launched our Emergency Food Box program to ensure they wouldn’t go without support. Since April 2020, we have delivered over 3,000 Emergency Food Boxes and 700 grocery bags to more than 120 seniors, bringing nourishment and comfort during a challenging time.

Gardening is another way we cultivate wellness. In the York Community Garden, seniors and residents grow fresh vegetables and herbs, from tomatoes and peppers to zucchinis, eggplants, and cucumbers. During the pandemic, we introduced “Gardening on Balconies,” a TD Friends of the Environment-supported program teaching seniors to grow food in small spaces. It quickly became a source of connection, purpose, and joy.

Today, our commitment to food security continues through our partnership with Second Harvest, delivering fresh food to over 100 people each week.

Community engagement goes beyond food. We create opportunities for seniors and families to explore nature, culture, and shared experiences. Our local trips have taken participants to Niagara Falls, St. Jacobs and Elmira Farmers’ Market, Albion Falls, Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area, and Niagara-on-the-Lake offering moments of discovery, connection, and fun.

Art and environmental projects are at the heart of what we do. Exhibitions like “Connecting the Community with Nature to Protect Pollinators through Art” highlight creativity from our York Community Garden. During Indigenous Resistance Month, we celebrate ancestral traditions and artistic expressions, deepening connections to culture and heritage.

Healthy living is always a priority. Each summer, we team up with Unison Health and Community Services to provide affordable fruits and vegetables to the community. We also helped bring the York Community Parkette to life—a collaborative project with My Main Street, the Canadian Urban Institute, FedDev Ontario, and the Keele Community Hub—creating a welcoming outdoor space where neighbors can connect, relax, and enjoy community life.

At the York Hispanic Centre, every program, garden, outing, and art project reflects our belief that strong communities are built through care, connection, and shared experiences.
